  • File a complaint with the police. Ask for the case reference number, and the officer's name and telephone number. If you obtain a copy of the police report, make sure it states your name and SIN.

Review it for any suspicious activity. Also, check to see if your credit file should be flagged–which indicates that your personal information has been put at risk and may be vulnerable to fraud.
  • Inform your bank and creditors by phone and in writing about any irregularities.
  • Report any irregularities in your mail delivery to Canada Post 
  • Visit a Service Canada Centre and bring any documents you have that may help prove the suspected fraud or misuse of your SIN. Also, bring an original identity document (your birth certificate or citizenship document). One of our officials will review your information and provide you with assistance and guidance.

You need to provide a primary document to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), replace your SIN card or amend your SIN record (e.g. a name change).

A primary document is an official document that proves your identity and status in Canada. We need to see an original of your primary document. If the name on this document is different from the name you currently use, you will also need to provide a supporting document.

SIN Eligibility Factor 


  • If you are a Canadian citizen, a newcomer to Canada or a temporary resident, you need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada or to receive benefits and services from government programs.
  • Children who are 12 years of age or older may apply for their own SIN.
  • Parents and legal guardians can also apply for a SIN for children under the age of majority of their province.
  • Each SIN is issued to one person only. It cannot legally be used by anyone else. You are responsible for protecting your SIN.
